Beauty 911

Danielle Schlass Saliman
July 28, 2008

A few weeks ago I was running late to a meeting (tardiness courtesy of my pint-sized offspring who just weren’t feeling my need to leave the house in a timely fashion), having speedily showered, slapped on my makeup and basically sprinted in really uncomfortable heels to where I had to be. I walked into the elevator, so thankful that I was there on time, and thank goodness for the mirrored walls on the way up. Apparently my mascara was running down my cheek (hello, 90 degree day), my hair was one big ball of frizz (110 percent humidity!), and no, those were not the shoes I meant to where, these had scuffs, bad ones. Oh well.

Here’s what I wished I had in my larger than necessary bag to rectify even just one of the many issues staring me in the face.

The 911: Help! My black shirt has those gross white deodorant stains!

The Fix: Miss Oops Rescue Sponge fits nicely in your bag, looks cute, and works well at wiping off those annoying powder marks—works wonders with errant bronzer spots to boot!

The 911: I swear I showered today, but my hair just has that not-so-fresh feeling!

The Fix: Whether you had your crazy curly hair blown out and just don’t want to wash it for a few days or your roots betrayed you with oil way too fast, stock your bag with Buttercream Cosmetics’ Shampowder and you’ll be good to go. Not only does it instantly freshen hair, it absorbs oil, the pigmented powder blends well with whatever shade your tresses may be, it adds body, and! the light vanilla scent will keep your hair smelling dandy too.

The 911: I have been clomping around in my cork wedges all day (no! they are not comfortable) and still have to go out to dinner with clients tonight. Ouch!

The Fix:
Spray on some of
ModelCo’s Cool Feet and you’ll get a few extra miles on your tired tootsies. It’s enriched with extracts of papaya for revitalization, bamboo to restore softness to the skin, and calming chamomile.  And since it’s a spray, you don’t have to worry about rubbing anything on your sandal-worn ( read dirty and stinky!) feet at the end of the day. Just spray and go!

The 911: Sitting at my desk while eating lunch, reading my emails and boom, the food missed my mouth and the salad dressing hit my blouse.

The Fix: Tide to Go Mini, literally the size of a tube of lipstick, is the new must-have emergency fix-it. Its got the  instant stain removal power of the original Tide to Go pen, but will now fit in even the smallest bag (or desk drawer, wherever you may need it!). Just dab and voila—you’re stain free.

The 911: My nail (circle one): snagged, chipped, broke, looks uneven) and I have no time for a sit down manicure.

The fix: Stash one of these portable, adorable and useful manicure kits from Triple C Design’s glamRock line in your tote. The funky, bright and trendy box sprinkled with Swarovski crystals holds cuticle nippers, nail scissors and a file.

The 911: Frizz! Enough said.

The Fix: In a real pinch you can just smooth it down with a little bit of hand cream, but you risk the flat, greasy look.

Instead, keep a bottle of Pantene Pro-V Restoratives Frizz Control Ultra-Smoothing Balm within reach for instant taming of unruly, frizzy hair—it also resists humidity for a smoother, longer lasting style.

The 911: I need an all over age-defying makeover for tonight’s party (I don’t want to look as tired and old as I feel), but I only have 10 minutes to get ready!

The Fix: Not a full-fledged miracle answer, but darn close to it,  we love Benefit’s mini Realness of Concealness kit, which comes with everything you could ever need to enhance and conceal: Lemon-Aid to correct discoloration on eyelids, Boi-ing to hide even the darkest under eye circles, a Ooh La Lift to brighten, lighten and tighten the eye area; Lip Plump to prime, smooth, and plump lips; and High Beam to give your skin an ethereal glow.
 Need we say more?

The 911: Scuffed shoes and not a shoe polish stand in sight.

The Fix: Foot Petals’ Perfect Polish Touch Up Shoe Polish. Don’t be confused, it looks like a tube of lip gloss but it’s a pen that pen touches up scuffs and scratches in an instant. The carnuba wax gives an instant, no buff, high-gloss shine and the formula is quick-dry so no need to wait around afterwards.

The 911: You could spot a vampire in my skin, it’s so reflective.

The fix: Blotting papers. Almost every major makeup brand makes their own, and we wholeheartedly believe you can wipe that shine and grease off your skin with any of them, but we adore Tweezerman’s Facial Blotting Paper, because you can decide what size you want the sheet to be. Like a roll of tinfoil, you just pull the paper and rip where you see fit—for big spots or tiny ones.
