Sample Fall’s Menswear Trend in Accessories Inspired by Annie Hall

With her neckties, waistcoats, and wide-legged trousers, Diane Keaton’s Annie Hall character single-handedly turned the fashion world on its head by showing that, hey, maybe we gals should be stealing stuff from our boyfriend’s closet after all. Thirty years on, the menswear-inspired trend has been resurrected for fall, with masculine accessories like lace-up boots and bowler hats putting a strong and assertive stamp on this season’s outfits. Get the look with these ''boy toys''.

Shoes: From lace-ups to oxfords, fall footwear is embracing its Y chromosome. Dolce Vita’s Babs Open-Toe Lace-Up Pump has a slight vintage charm, with the added bonus of ticking off this season’s stacked heel and cut-out trends as well. Pied a Terre’s Flat Lace-Up Brogues, in a slick patent leather, no less, work well with black tights and a dress. Aerosole’s tasseled Bookmark oxfords come in black, brown, and dark green, and add a tough edge to a skirt or dress. 

Bags: Sparkling little clutches and patent-trimmed shoulder bags? Not for this look. Instead, turn to slouchy, distressed leather totes with antique-looking hardware and rich, slightly weathered leather. Foley + Corinna’s Mid City Tote in Chocolate feels masculine yet modern, thanks to pebbled leather and a unique fold-over design. Another rugged favorite is Diesel’s Veruna Weekend Bag, which boasts vintage-treated coffee bean-hued leather. Alternatively, look for a roomy woven tote with a bohemian flair, such as the Eric Javits Field Shopper.

Hat: Top your look off with a wide black hat like the one Annie wears in the film. Our pick? Topshop’s Chaplin-esque bowler hat, which can help you keep a bad hair day under wraps. Or, crown yourself with Banana Republic’s large floppy hat, which has that perfectly slouchy Annie Hall vibe. 

Extras: For that final masculine touch, add Forever 21’s Star Suspenders over a white tee and jeans or a black high-waisted skirt, or steal your dad’s tie. Keep it classic in solids or stripes— steer clear of busy florals or kitschy Snoopy numbers you may have given him for father's day.
