Best dressed for every workplace
By Alisa Welch
August 25, 2008
Every office has its own particular fashion code, be it strictly
conservative or resolutely casual, but with a few fashion ground rules,
dressing for work doesn’t have to be a chore.
For
the lawyer in a high-powered law firm:
Have you ever noticed that the higher up the chain of command, the more
idiosyncratic the fashion choices? I once knew a successful criminal
defense attorney who wore nothing but vintage 1940s suits straight out
of a film noir. The key is to cultivate professional credibility without
losing your personal style, including modern cut suits and memorable
accessories. Start with a well-fitted suit (Banana Republic’s
Classic lightweight wool blazer and trouser set is a favorite) and a
silky blouse (I love Voom’s
Goddess top), add a signature piece of dramatic jewelry such as
Gerard Yosca’s rich coral and sapphire
cuff, a pair of attention-grabbing heels (check out Guess’s red
faux-croc
Harri platforms) and the verdict will certainly be in your favor.
For
the advertising executive:
Navigating between the creative and corporate worlds is a daily
on-the-job challenge for the ad whiz—and her closet. Looking
respectable enough for the suits while keeping it real for the creatives
means there is leeway but not a free pass. Keep your options open by
sticking with traditional shapes such as a blazer, but play with
materials and interesting cuts such as arden b’s
Satin Crop jacket featuring a nipped-in waist and graceful pleated
hem. I’m enamored with
Doucette
Duvall’s Mad Men-inspired
Beatrice dress with its vintage gold buttons and fetching blue plaid
fabric.
For
the casual creative:
The
word casual does not translate into sweatpants in the workplace.
Instead, your casual office ensemble should reflect your personality and
individuality while remaining somewhat put-together (i.e. no tracksuits
either). Look for one-of-a-kind pieces such as
MaxStudio’s gorgeous bohemian
Tucked and Beaded Tunica blouse, mix it with 7 For All Mankind’s
sleek and skinny
Edie jeans, a pair of brightly colored
flats, top the whole look with Free People’s
Sailor Dolman jacket and you’ve got a look that says you mean
business.

Tucked and beaded silk tunica ($298.00)
Every wardrobe needs a statement piece like this intricately detailed tunic with artisanal glam. Please look at this top from every angle to see the beautiful contrasts in texture and color, created by tucking and beading. A flirty georgette belt creates the drop-waisted and blouson silhouette that has a longer length ideal to pair with slim trousers and jeans. The gossamer silk fabric is luxe and moves with romance at the billowy shirred and sheer sleeves and throughout the body. This must-own tunic fits true to size and is fully lined. Leon max limited edition.
