Fall
Jewelry Forecast: Partly feminine with a touch of Hollywood glamour
By Alisa Welch
August 4, 2008
As
swimsuits are traded for tailored suits, it’s a perfect time to check
out what’s new for the jewelry box.
Fall’s feminine romantic looks--think flowing silk chemises, muted
colors, and pretty hair and make-up--call for fitting accessories. A
classic locket such as
Mondera’s 14k yellow gold and diamond is a sentimental token just
right for photos of your sweetheart (or your dog).
Another feminine icon, the bow, crops up on unexpected but nonetheless
fresh fall looks. Los Angeles designer Gabriela Artigas discovered a
treasure trove of vintage gold mesh bows in the archives of
the former accessory
manufacturer for Chanel and wouldn’t Coco love Artigas’s
headbands made with these chic pieces of history.
While bows do evoke a certain schoolgirl charm, there are
plenty of options that all grown-up. Rachel Leigh’s artful gold-plated
Olivia
stud earrings have the look of a braided bow a forgetful type
might tie around her finger.
Speaking of forgetting, there was a time when a woman without a brooch
might well have walked out of her door naked. Over the years, the
brooch moved to the back of the fashion’s closet, but lately, this
mainstay on the lapels of grandmothers everywhere is experiencing a
revival as a must-have accessory. JCrew’s fall collection of bug and
flower brooches are fun and fresh, but for a retro look, check out AZ
Collection's
Green Eyed Cat gold plated pin featuring a mischievous kitty holding
a pearl.
Brooches aren’t just for lapels anymore, as the new line of ‘hipwear’ by
Sugarpeace demonstrates. Designed to clip to anything with a belt
loop, these super-sparkly crystal pendants bring the bling to jeans,
skirts, or even boring old work trousers. Expect to see these twinkling
accessories on the hips of Hollywood’s fashion set come fall.
As for the young starlets orbiting Hollywood, they are loading up on
Jessica Kagan Cushman resin bracelets that come in a kaleidoscope of
colors and feature amusing phrases. I love her Wizard of Oz-inspired
''I'll get you my pretty...and your little dog, too!''
bangles.
There
you have it my pretties, the key to looking great this fall:
accessorize, accessorize, accessorize.
