Avril Lavigne for Kohl's: From "Punk" to "Fashion Designer"
Oh, Avril Lavigne. You have been forgiven for everything from pretending to be a punk and a sk8r girl to pilfering lyrics from '70s pop bands and not knowing how to pronounce David Bowie's name. But this, girlfriend (your song says you can be my girlfriend, so…), really makes me want to convulse.
The singer's clothing collection, Abbey Dawn, just hit Kohl's stores with an explosion of color and what she terms "glam-rock" style. There is, of course, the obligatory pleated, plaid miniskirt, which all cool punk rockers wear; plaid pants and Bermuda shorts; a couple of Plain Jane blouses to establish a sense of normalcy; and…wait for it…
Hot pink, stretchy cotton capris ($25) emblazoned with a lightning bolt and "Rock It" down one leg, with zippered hems to "personalize your look," according to the folks at Kohl's.
Seriously. Unforgivable.

In Stores Now: Botkier for Target
On every fashionista's radar today: Botkier for Target, which I blogged about a few months ago but wasn't too sure would meet expectations. The entire collection is finally in stores and online, and there's no need to think twice: This metallic, chic extravaganza is destined to do big business (although we hardly needed to see it to know that).
Rose metallics always strike me as prettier and more understated than their much more glitzy counterparts. This satchel ($40) is shiny and ultra-soft, gently ruched all over for a bulky effect. It's laden with the usual functional details, including a phone pocket and zippered compartment.
It is, though, made of PVC, which is a drawback that bag addicts everywhere noted with the Gryson collection earlier this year. Are you willing to pay for plastic if there's a big name attached to it?

Mars & Valentine Redefine Vintage
Everything old is new again, a sentiment quite evident in the designs from jewelry masterminds Mars & Valentine.
Bringing a modern edge to vintage glass, this elegant rose ring ($249 from $395) balances its romantic side with rich, textured sterling silver. At its heart is a striking rose intaglio, lending it an air of something that might be procured on a weekend antiquing expedition.
As you browse through Mars & Valentine's unimaginably graceful collection, you might be impressed by its ability to retain a sense of downtown-chic at the same time. The only downside? Those of us who wear small ring sizes are out of luck. Steer me in the direction of an equally fabulous ring in a size four and life will be grand.

The Best Jeans for Long Legs, No Hips and No Butt
I have the hardest time finding jeans because I don't have much of a shape. I have long legs, but no hips or butt. Any good ideas on where I can find jeans that fit?
Steer clear of stiff, sturdy denim – the kind that feels as awful to touch as it does to wear. Opt instead for stretchy jeans that add a little shape, a little lift, a little junk in the trunk. Some embellishment on the posterior, like pockets or topstitching, instantly lends a more full appearance to the area.
Check out Hudson signature bootcut jeans ($165), which one of my lovely and ultra-tall friends swears gives her the best behind ever. The pockets are wide-set, lending an even greater illusion of shape.

Can I Pull Off Blunt Bangs?
Would blunt bangs down to your eyes look good on a short and oval-faced person?
Oval faces can pull off so many different styles and almost never suffer the consequences of a hair risk gone wrong.
Blunt bangs are ideal for lengthier faces for a number of reasons: They're chic, modern and instantly balance large foreheads. They also have Hollywood's seal of approval, cropping up on heads of all shapes and women of all heights (but not flattering anyone as much as you oval-faced mavens).
Channeling a bit of a retro feel, it looks so chic and pulled together on Naomi Campbell that it almost makes you forget she's a teeny bit of a lunatic.

Kelly Osbourne Earns Her Stripes
Red skies at night are all good and well, but red stripes during the day? Even better!
Proving that girls with curves can (and should, darn it) wear horizontal stripes, Kelly Osbourne is Betsy Ross perfection in this refreshing red and white striped sweater dress. The sleek black bob (so, so, SO much better than that teenage fuchsia faux-hawk) adds a slight bad girl edge, with the gold flats bringing in the razzle-dazzle.
Love how this look is so effortlessly chic, and something that any girl who’s earned her stripes can pull off. Just slick that hair back, throw on a cute dress, step into some comfy-glam flats, and be on your way. In the words of Kelly’s potty-mouthed mum Sharon: ‘effin’ gorgeous!’

Rachel Bilson's Cool Cut-Offs
There are so, so many ways to deal with an ex-boyfriend’s abandoned clothes: Return them (yeah right), burn them (possible smoke inhalation isn’t worth it), sprinkle them on the pavement below (neighbors might think you’re crazy), or, if you’re inspired by Rachel Bilson DIY denim shorts, rip ‘em, shred ‘em, and tie on a yummy belt.
Though the shorts themselves are too rough around the edges (literally – look at that side slit!) for my liking, I dig the concept. White tee – here updated with hip puff sleeves – denim cutoffs, sandal…it’s as summery as watermelon slices and sand in your swimsuit.

Maggie Gyllenhaal Gets Batty
I’ve got 5 words for Maggie Gyllenhaal’s LBD: ‘Project Runway’ Garbage Bag Disaster.
I’ve had a soft spot for Maggie since her days in the ‘Secretary’ pool, but this asymmetrical black frock is more Hefty than haute. The edgy design isn’t so much of a deal-breaker, but the liquid black fabric – reminiscent of oil spills, inkwells, and Edgar Allen Poe’s shower curtains – isn’t something I want to reach out and touch.
As for that matching headband? Methinks John Travolta might be missing his hairpiece.
